For the Love of Dahlias

Writer's picture: Farmer ZoeFarmer Zoe

Have you ever grown dahlias before?  The process requires placing your faith in a brown, oblong tuber.  Through some miracle, this oddly shaped lump produces the most extraordinary flowers, bursting with colors and patterns, and plump from copious layers of petals.  After the flowers finish blooming, another surprise is yet to come.  Below the ground, the tuber has multiplied itself by five fold, or perhaps even more.

Of course, growing these beautiful flowers requires not just faith, but also toil and sweat.  Here on my farm in Connecticut, it is the season for digging and dividing our dahlia tubers.  The heavy clumps of tubers must be dug up from the ground, or else they will freeze and perish over the winter.  Then, we wash away the dirt clinging to them.  The tubers are rock hard; yet also must be cut apart with care to avoid damaging the eyes that will yield new dahlia plants.  We do this hard work for you so that you can grow stunning and gorgeous dahlia flowers in your garden.  These flowers take me away from all my stress and troubles when I walk through them, and bring me incredible joy.  I want for you to feel the same way when you walk through your garden.  My customers from last year’s tuber sale have been sending me pictures of their dahlias blooming in their gardens and it has me totally excited to be offering tubers again this year.

We don’t have any rare varieties or new releases; what we do have are dahlia varieties that have bloomed very reliably for us here on our farm, in colors that have been popular in weddings.  On my small farm, I find it essential that every plant reliably produces an abundance of beautiful flowers.  If you’d like the same for your garden, please consider shopping our dahlia tuber preorder, opening soon on October 16, 2024.  We offer your choice of shipping or local pick up.  We have two dates to choose from to receive your tubers: second week of February or last week of April.
